Safe eyelash growth?

Not all eyelash growth treatments and eyelash serums have the same ingredients, and some have been tested to a higher standard than others. So are all eyelash growth treatments safe?

There are a wide variety of eyelash serums on the market, most of which contain ingredients designed to condition your lashes.

Good condition can contribute to longer and healthier lashes, but that doesn’t mean that these products are actively promoting growth.

In fact, the vast majority of over-the-counter serums contain no active growth ingredient at all. Many of the formulations are the same, regardless of the branding on the bottle.

These products will all have been through standard cosmetic stability tests. They’ll most likely be safe to use, but don’t expect significant results.

Are eyelash "growth" serums safe?

Opti Lash Growth is clinically proven to be safe, and effective at growing your eyelashes.

The active ingredient is bimatoprost, a prostaglandin analogue. Bimatoprost mimics a naturally-occurring molecule, which regulates the growth of your hair.

When you apply it onto your lash line it soaks into the hair follicle and causes your eyelash to enter its anagen, or growth, phase. The individual hairs grow thicker and longer than normal. The increased thickness often results in a darker appearance to each hair. The FDA trial in America for the approval of Bimatoprost in eyelash serums found that the eyelashes were on average 106% thicker, 25% longer and 18% darker than before.

Bimatoprost has been clinically tested for eyelash growth. It’s an FDA-approved prescription-only drug, and a doctor must approve its use. At Opti Labs, our doctors approve online orders after reviewing a medical form. This is important because prostaglandins can be very potent. If you use too much, you could suffer side effects. You should be particularly careful not to use it during pregnancy or breastfeeding. For more information, refer to this paper by the Cleveland Clinic.

There are, however, over-the-counter products available, which contain other, untested, prostaglandin analogues:

  • Isopropyl cloprostenate
  • Dechloro dihydroxy difluoro ethylcloprostenolamide
  • Isopropyl phenyl hydroxypentane
  • Dihydroxy cyclopentyl heptane

Unlike the 0.03% bimatoprost solution in Mylash Growth Treatment, these molecules have not been clinically tested for safety and efficacy. They aren’t subject to the regulations usually applied to active ingredients (i.e. drugs) or to medical supervision.

At Opti Labs, we recommend checking the ingredient list on any eyelash growth product before purchase. If in doubt, feel free to contact us for more information.
