THE PRESCRIPTION STRENGTH TREATMENT FOR EYELASH GROWTH

Bimatoprost eyelash serum is a prescription-strength treatment used to help eyelashes grow longer, thicker and darker. It is the active ingredient best known from LATISSE in the United States and Lumigan in glaucoma treatment. At Opti Laboratories, we use bimatoprost 0.3 mg/ml, also written as 0.03%, as part of a doctor-reviewed lash and brow growth service.

Understanding the product

What is bimatoprost?

Bimatoprost is a prostaglandin analogue: a molecule that mimics natural signalling compounds involved in the hair growth cycle. It was first developed as an eye medicine for raised eye pressure and glaucoma. Doctors then noticed a striking side effect in some patients: their eyelashes became longer, thicker and darker.

That observation led to the development of bimatoprost as a treatment for inadequate eyelashes, also called eyelash hypotrichosis. In the United States, the best-known brand is LATISSE. In the UK and Europe, many people search for the active ingredient itself: bimatoprost.

Bimatoprost eyelash serum is not just a conditioner. It is a growth treatment that acts at the follicle level to help lashes spend longer in their active growth phase.

How does bimatoprost help eyelashes grow?

Eyelashes grow in cycles. The most important phase is the anagen phase, which is the active growth phase. Scalp hair can remain in anagen for years, which is why it can grow very long. Eyelashes have a much shorter growth phase, so they naturally stop at a shorter length.

Bimatoprost helps by prolonging and strengthening this active growth phase. When more lash follicles remain in the growth phase for longer, lashes grow significantly longer than they would naturally. The individual hair fibres become thicker which each individual lash more visible.

This is why bimatoprost eyelash growth is different from the effect of over the counter lash serums. Conditioning ingredients may reduce breakage and improve shine, but they do not have the same clinical evidence for changing the behaviour of the lash follicle.

THE FOLLICLE EFFECT

Bimatoprost works locally on the lash follicle, helping lashes remain in the growth phase for longer.

THE VISIBLE RESULT

Lashes grow longer, fuller and darker because individual hairs grow for longer and become more substantial.

THE RESULTS

What CAN BIMATOPROST DO?

Clinical data for Latisse reported average improvements at 16 weeks of 25% longer lashes, 106% greater fullness or thickness, and 18% darker lashes. Individual results vary but these figures explain why bimatoprost remains the reference point when people search for a clinically proven eyelash growth serum.

In practice most people use bimatoprost because they want a natural looking improvement rather than false lashes or extensions. The result is still your own eyelashes that have grown longer, thicker and darker than before.

Results are gradual. Bimatoprost doesn’t create instant length. It works through the lash growth cycle which lasts an average of 16 weeks. That is why consistent use is important for the best results.

How long does bimatoprost take to work?

Bimatoprost is usually assessed over a 16 week period. Some people notice early changes sooner but the full effect takes time because new lash growth must emerge from the follicle to become visible. This bottom up growth takes time but it is worth the wait.

WHAT IT DOES

WHAT YOU SEE

wEEKS 1-4

More follicles are being encouraged into, or maintained within, the active growth phase.

Some people notice early improvement in lash length or thickness, but visible change may still be subtle.

wEEKS 4-8

New growth is appearing above the lash line.

Early length and thickness changes often become easier to see.

wEEKS 8-16

Lashes begin to experience the cumulative effect of a longer active growth phase.

Lashes start to look fuller, longer and darker.

wEEKS 8-16

Maintenance phases. Stopping treatment allows lashes to gradually return towards their natural baseline over time.

Most people move into a maintenance pattern if they want to preserve the result.

THE COMPARISON

Bimatoprost eyelash serum vs ordinary lash serums

The phrase “lash serum” is used very loosely. Some products are true growth treatments. Others are conditioning serums that make existing lashes look healthier by reducing dryness, brittleness and breakage.

Both types can have value, but they should not be confused.

BIMATOPROST 0.03%

Stimulates visible eyelash growth by acting at the follicle level.

Supported by clinical studies on eyelash hypotrichosis.

Longer, thicker and darker-looking lashes.

Potent active ingredient requires appropriate review.

ORDINARY COSMETIC LASH SERUMS

Conditions the lash shaft and may reduce breakage.

Evidence varies widely; often based on cosmetic conditioning rather than true growth.

Softer, glossier or healthier-looking lashes.

Usually sold as standard cosmetics without medical review.

ONE INGREDIENT, TWO USES

Is bimatoprost the same as Latisse or Lumigan?

Bimatoprost is an active ingredient. It is used in products associated with brand names Latisse, Lumigan and, of course, Opti Laboratories.

LATISSE

A US brand developed specifically for eyelash hypotrichosis. Contains bimatoprost 0.03%.

LUMIGAN

Eyelash growth was first noticed in patients using bimatoprost for eye-pressure treatment.A glaucoma eye-drop brand containing bimatoprost.

OPTI LABORATORIES

A UK doctor led lash and brow growth service that supplies bimatoprost. Provides bimatoprost 0.03% for lash and brow growth with online consultation.

APPLICATION GUIDE

How to apply bimatoprost eyelash serum

Correct application is important. Bimatoprost should be used carefully, sparingly and precisely. The aim is to apply a tiny amount to the skin at the base of the eyelashes, not into the eye itself.

  1. Start with a clean face and remove eye makeup.
  2. Remove contact lenses before application if you wear them and do not insert again for at least 20 minutes.
  3. Use a clean, precision applicator.
  4. Apply a small amount along the lash line, where the lashes emerge from the skin.
  5. Blot away any excess solution, but this often means that you have applied too much.
  6. Use consistently, once daily at night.

More is not better. Applying extra bimatoprost does not improve results and can increase the risk of irritation, skin darkening or unwanted hair growth where the solution touches the skin.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

Is bimatoprost safe?

Bimatoprost has been used for many years in eye medicine and has also been studied for eyelash growth. For many people it is well tolerated when used correctly. However, it is not an ordinary cosmetic conditioner and it is not suitable for everyone.

The most common reported side effects with Latisse include eye irritation and eye redness. Other possible effects include eyelid skin darkening, dry eye symptoms, unwanted hair growth where the solution spreads, and changes in pigmentation. Iris pigmentation is more associated with use directly onto the eye for glaucoma and although we have never had a client have this problem since we started in 2007, it remains an important safety point to understand.

POSSIBLE SIDE EFFECTS

Itchy or red eyes.

Eye irritation, dryness or watering.

Darkening of the eyelid skin.

Unwanted hair growth on nearby skin if the solution spreads.

Changes around the eyelid or eye area, particularly with inappropriate exposure.

Possible iris pigmentation change, especially when bimatoprost is used as an eye drop.

Who should be especially cautious?

We do not provide this treatment if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, under 18, or have serious eye problems. We do this to act in your best interest. It is a cosmetic treatment and we think that it is best to err on the side of caution.

At Opti Laboratories, orders for Growth Treatment are reviewed by UK doctors through an online medical form. We occasionally email or call to ask for further details, especially if it would be easier to chat over any points. This review matters because bimatoprost is a potent active ingredient and proper guidance helps you achieve safe, effective results.

OUR OTHER PRODUCTS

Can bimatoprost be used for eyebrows?

Bimatoprost is best known for eyelash growth, but it is also used by many clients who want fuller-looking eyebrows. The principle is similar: the aim is to support viable follicles and encourage a stronger growth phase, with the result being thicker and darker brows.

This can be useful for people with naturally sparse brows, age-related thinning, over-plucking, thyroid-related brow thinning, or recovery after medical treatments. It does not correct every cause of eyebrow loss. If brow loss is sudden, patchy, inflamed, scarring or associated with other symptoms, the underlying cause should be assessed first.

ABOUT US

Why choose Opti Laboratories?

Opti Laboratories is a doctor led UK brand specialising in eyelash and eyebrow growth. Our work began with Mylash, founded by Dr Tom Walker in 2007, and has developed into a broader scientific beauty company focused on lash and brow health.

We are not a general beauty brand adding a lash product as an afterthought. Eyelash and eyebrow growth is our specialist area. We help people who want cosmetic enhancement, but also clients recovering from chemotherapy, thyroid-related thinning, trichotillomania, over-plucking, medication-related shedding and other causes of lash or brow loss.

LONGTERM customer

"Phenomenal results."

“I’ve used MyLash (now Opti) for several years. My eyes appear more open and brighter and I get comments all the time. Over the years I’ve stopped occasionally and my lashes reverted to short stubby ones. My advice is to continue and don’t get lazy. It takes 30 seconds each day and gives phenomenal results. It’s much more affordable — and gives a better appearance — than extensions.”

Frequently asked questions

What is bimatoprost eyelash serum?

Bimatoprost eyelash serum is a prescription-strength eyelash growth treatment that uses bimatoprost 0.03% to support longer, thicker and darker-looking eyelashes. It is different from ordinary conditioning serums because it acts at the hair follicle and helps prolong the active growth phase of the lash cycle.

Does bimatoprost really grow eyelashes?

Yes. Clinical data for LATISSE, which contains bimatoprost 0.03%, reported average improvements at 16 weeks of 25% longer lashes, 106% greater fullness or thickness, and 18% darker lashes. Individual results vary, but bimatoprost remains the best-known clinically proven active ingredient for eyelash growth.

How long does bimatoprost take to work?

Most people should think in terms of weeks rather than days. Early changes may appear from around 4 weeks, more visible improvements are often seen between 8 and 12 weeks, and full results are usually assessed at around 16 weeks.

Is bimatoprost the same as Latisse?

Bimatoprost is the active ingredient. LATISSE is the US brand name for bimatoprost 0.03% used for eyelash hypotrichosis. Opti Laboratories Growth Treatment uses bimatoprost 0.3 mg/ml, also written as 0.03%, as part of a UK doctor-reviewed service.

Is bimatoprost the same as Lumigan?

Lumigan is a glaucoma eye-drop brand that contains bimatoprost. Eyelash growth was first noticed in patients using bimatoprost for eye-pressure treatment. For eyelash growth, the product is applied carefully to the upper lash line rather than used as a glaucoma eye drop.

Is bimatoprost better than ordinary lash serums?

For true eyelash growth, bimatoprost has stronger clinical evidence than ordinary cosmetic lash serums. Most over-the-counter serums mainly condition the hair shaft, which can still be useful, but they do not have the same level of evidence for changing the lash growth cycle.

Is bimatoprost safe?

Bimatoprost is well tolerated by many people when used correctly, but it is not suitable for everyone. It can cause side effects and should be used only after appropriate review, especially if you have eye disease, previous eye surgery, glaucoma, active eye inflammation, pregnancy or breastfeeding.

What are the side effects of bimatoprost eyelash serum?

Possible side effects include itchy or red eyes, eye irritation, dry eye symptoms, eyelid redness, eyelid skin darkening, unwanted hair growth where the solution touches surrounding skin, and pigmentation changes. Using the smallest effective amount and avoiding spread onto surrounding skin helps reduce risk.

Can I use bimatoprost on my eyebrows?

Bimatoprost is best known for eyelash growth, but it is also used by many people to support fuller-looking eyebrows. It may help viable brow follicles produce stronger visible hairs, although sudden, patchy, inflamed or scarring eyebrow loss should be medically assessed first.

What happens if I stop using bimatoprost?

If you stop using bimatoprost, the growth effect gradually wears off as the lashes move through their normal growth cycle. The lashes are expected to return towards their original length and thickness over time rather than remain permanently enhanced.

Can I buy bimatoprost eyelash serum in the UK?

Bimatoprost is not a standard cosmetic lash conditioner. In the UK, it should be accessed through an appropriate clinical route. Opti Laboratories provides a UK doctor-reviewed online service for suitable adults who want prescription-strength lash or brow growth treatment.

Who should not use bimatoprost?

Bimatoprost may not be suitable if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, under 18, have active eye inflammation, have had certain eye surgery, have glaucoma or raised eye pressure, have macular oedema, or are using other eye medicines. A medical review is important before treatment.
